Remembering Christian Santiago

Christian Santiago was only 20 years old, and news of his death has left those who knew him facing grief and disbelief.

While the circumstances surrounding his final hours are now the subject of an active investigation, his death represents a profound loss for his family, friends and everyone who knew him.

At such a young age, Christian’s life was still unfolding, with years of possibilities ahead of him. His death has therefore brought renewed attention to the human tragedy behind the police investigation.

Police Pursuit in Scranton

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the incident began Sunday after Scranton police investigated a burglary involving a .30-06 rifle that Santiago was allegedly accused of taking from a relative’s residence.

Police said a family member later received a photograph showing Santiago with the rifle and ammunition. His family subsequently obtained an involuntary mental-health commitment warrant.

Scranton police attempted to stop Santiago, but investigators said he fled in a black Ford Focus. At approximately 8:37 p.m., Pennsylvania State Police located the vehicle at the Penn Can Travel Plaza in Susquehanna County, prompting a pursuit southbound on Interstate 81.

The pursuit continued through several communities in Lackawanna County before officers ultimately brought it to an end near the beginning of the Scranton Expressway.

Gunfire Ends the Pursuit

State police said troopers used a pursuit intervention technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, to stop the vehicle.

During the subsequent felony traffic stop, investigators said Santiago displayed a rifle through the driver’s-side window and failed to comply with police commands.

A gunshot was then heard coming from inside the vehicle. State police subsequently fired rounds into the vehicle.

Members of the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team, Scranton Police Special Operations Group and Lackawanna County SWAT Team removed Santiago from the vehicle.

He was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he later died.

Christian Santiago Cause of Death

The precise source of the fatal gunshot remains under investigation.

Pennsylvania State Police have not yet determined whether the shot that caused Santiago’s fatal injury came from inside his vehicle or from police gunfire.

The PSP Troop R Major Case Team is investigating with assistance from forensic personnel and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist unit.

Because that investigation remains active, it would be premature to attribute responsibility for the fatal shot until investigators reach a determination.

Investigation Continues

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation will focus on reconstructing the final moments of the pursuit, examining physical and forensic evidence, and determining the origin of the gunshot that caused Santiago’s death.

The circumstances have brought together investigators from multiple agencies as officials work to establish exactly what happened during the confrontation.
