Cassie Renfrow Cause of Death: Columbus Community Mourns Beloved Science Teacher After Brain Aneurysm
The Columbus, Georgia, community is mourning the loss of Cassie Myers Renfrow, a beloved science teacher whose kindness, enthusiasm and dedication to her students left a lasting impression on generations of young people.
Cassie, 38, died on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm. Her sudden death has left her family, friends, colleagues and students grieving the loss of a woman remembered for bringing energy and joy into every room she entered.
A Dedicated Educator
Cassie’s connection to education spanned more than a decade. She spent 13 years with the Muscogee County School District, beginning her teaching career at Shaw High School before moving to Northside High School, where she had been teaching science for nearly five years.
Her academic background reflected the same love of learning that she brought into the classroom. Cassie earned a degree in biology from the University of Alabama before completing a Master of Science in Environmental Science at Columbus State University and a Specialist of Education degree from the University of West Georgia. She also worked as an adjunct lecturer at Columbus State University.
Those who worked alongside Cassie remembered her as an exceptionally creative and dedicated teacher. She put considerable thought into her lessons and wanted her students to understand what they were learning rather than simply complete assignments.
Remembered for Her Kindness and Joy
At Northside High School, Cassie’s personality made her especially memorable. Colleagues described her as someone whose joy and kindness were contagious, while her enthusiasm for school activities and her students became an important part of the school community.
Her impact extended beyond the classroom. Cassie was also known for her involvement with environmental work and previously served as executive director of Columbus RiverWarden. Her obituary describes her as a lifelong learner, trivia enthusiast and passionate Alabama football fan who could make people feel genuinely valued in her presence.
For former students, the loss is particularly painful. A teacher can become an important influence during a young person’s formative years, and Cassie’s commitment to encouraging and supporting her students ensured that her influence reached well beyond individual lessons.
Cause of Death
Cassie’s death followed a medical emergency that began on August 25, when she experienced what she described as the worst headache of her life while at school. Doctors discovered that she had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was subsequently flown to Atlanta for emergency surgery to stop the bleeding, but after days of fighting for her life, she died on September 4.
Her family, colleagues and students are now facing the difficult task of saying goodbye to someone whose life was defined by learning, teaching, laughter and compassion.
Cassie is survived by her mother, Ann Myers, her brother Josh Myers, her two stepsons, Luke and Nate Renfrow, her niece and nephew, her significant other Jack Tinkler IV, and extended family members.
A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. at McMullen Funeral Home in Columbus, followed by a private funeral service.
Cassie Renfrow’s legacy will live on through the students she taught, the colleagues she inspired, the environmental work she supported and the family and friends who knew her best. For the Columbus community, her memory will remain tied to the joy, kindness and unmistakable enthusiasm she brought to the lives around her.
