Bloomington Indiana Shooting Today: 19-Year-Old Man Injured Near Kirkwood Avenue
A shooting in Bloomington, Indiana, today left a 19-year-old man injured early Sunday morning near Kirkwood Avenue, prompting a police investigation and an emergency alert for the area around Indiana University Bloomington.
Bloomington Police said multiple 911 calls were received at approximately 1:07 a.m. on September 6, 2026, reporting gunfire in the 300 block of East Kirkwood Avenue. Officers responded to the area near the southwest corner of the Monroe County Public Library.
The incident also prompted Indiana University to issue emergency alerts directing people to avoid the area around Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street while police investigated. A later university alert said the threat was no longer considered imminent, although people were still advised to stay away from the area.
19-Year-Old Man Injured
When officers initially arrived, they did not find a shooting victim at the scene. Police discovered blood and personal belongings on the sidewalk.
Authorities were later notified that a 19-year-old man had arrived at IU Health Bloomington Hospital with gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder. Police said he was believed to be in stable condition.
Investigators went to the hospital to speak with the injured man, but police said he declined to cooperate and did not provide information about the circumstances of the shooting or the identity of the person responsible.
What Police Say Happened
According to witnesses interviewed by Bloomington police, two men appeared to be involved in a disturbance near the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and Lincoln Street.
Witnesses reportedly saw one of the men produce a handgun and point it at the other. A single gunshot was then heard, causing people in the area to run from the scene.
Police also discovered apparent bullet damage to the brick exterior of an Old National Bank location across the street from the shooting scene.
The suspected shooter reportedly left the area in a nearby vehicle before officers arrived. Indiana University’s emergency alert described the vehicle as a blue or gray sedan that fled north on Grant Street.
Suspect Remains Unidentified
As of the latest reports, no suspect had been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the Bloomington shooting.
The investigation remains active, with detectives seeking witnesses, video footage and other information that could help establish what happened and identify the person responsible.
